7.National Stroke Campaign (October 23-29, 2010) and World Stroke Day (October 29, 2010)
Every six seconds, independent of age or gender, someone in the world dies because of stroke.
This fact, however, is more than just a public health statistics. These people were also brothers, sisters, husbands, wifes, sons, mothers, fathers or friends of someone. They were real and loved. Behind the cold numbers are real lives. The World Stroke Organization (WSO) are requiring urgent actions to stop this silent epidemy with the international campaign "1 in 6" at the World Stroke Day, October 29.
The aim of the campaign is to put the fight against stroke as the top priority in the global health agenda. The theme of the "1 in 6" campaign was chose by the WSO liders to highlight the fact that one in six people in the world will have a stroke in his lifetime. Everyone is in danger and the situation will getting worse because of our complacency and inertia to get better quality of life.
The "1 in 6" campaign celebrates not only the fact that stroke could be prevented, but also that stroke survivors could recover completely and keep their quality of life with specific care and support in the long term. These two years campaign has the objective to reduce stroke impact acting on six basic challenges:
1. Know your own risk factors: arterial hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia (high colesterol).
2. To be physical active and to exercise yourself regularly.
3. Prevent obesity with a balanced diet.
4. Limit alcohol intake.
5. Prevent smoking, if you smoke seek for help today.
6. Learn how to recognize stroke symptoms and their warning signs.
Stroke is the second cause of death between persons above 60 years old and the fifth cause in persons between 15 and 59 years old. It also affects children, including newborns. Each year, almost 6 million people die with stroke. Actually, stroke is responsible for more deaths than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria together - three disease that are examples of public health campaign success, capturing world media attention and, consequently, encouraging world liders, governments and civil society sectors to act.
Stroke is the leading cause of death and morbidity in Brazil, with a great economic and social impact. The Rede Brasil AVC, Brazilian Society of Cerebrovascular Diseases and Brazilian Academy of Neurology are united in this fight and will do public campaigns at October 24-29 to warn the brazilian population.
