What is stroke?
Stroke can be definied as the acute onset of a neurologic deficit (for example arm weakness) caused by an alteration of the normal blood vessels in the brain. Classically stroke is divided in 2 subtypes:
Ischemic Stroke: occurs as a result of an cerebral vessel occlusion or acute reduction in blood flow through a specific artery (cerebral vessel) leading to decreased blood supply to the brain area supported by that specific artery.
Hemorrhagic Stroke: this type of stroke is caused by a non-traumatic spontaneous cerebral vessel rupture with blood leaking to the brain interior (intracerebral hemorrhage), to the ventricular system (intraventricular hemorrhage) or subarachnoid space (subarachnoid hemorrhage).
